很早以前国外已有人用萵苣汁及香蕉汁治疗消化性潰瘍病得到一定的效果。1948年Cheney发現生包菜汁中含有一种抗潰瘍因子(antiulcer factor),并命名为維生素U。1954年McRorie等証明其化学結构为蛋氨酸的甲基锍盐(methylmethionine sulfoniumsalt)。以后又經过Strehler等,进一步研究。近年来已在临床上推广应用,証明該品对消化性潰瘍病的治疗确实有良好效果,并对肝炎也有一定疗效。 維生素U的化学合成法基本上可分为两条路綫:一条是以1945年Toennies及Kolb的方法为基础。卽将蛋氨酸与碘甲烷或溴甲烷作用生成維生素U的碘化物或溴化物。反应如下:
