China is a big producer of tungsten sand. Tungsten sand and tungsten products account for 80% of the world’s total exports. In the mid-1980s, the price of tungsten sand in the international market was 150-160 U.S. dollars per tonne. Due to the large number of long-term Chinese exports, a large amount of tungsten sand in the international market was flooded. In addition, Chinese exporters competed for dumping at a low price, causing the price of tungsten sand to drop violently . In the six-month period from August 1993 to January 1994, the price of tungsten sand in London’s strategic metals market dropped to a trough of 25 U.S. dollars per tonne, down 125-135 U.S. dollars per tonne from 1986. Before the economic recession in the western industrialized countries in the early 1990s, the demand of tungsten in the major Western industrial nations was 12,000 tons (calculated as tungsten content, the same below). After the recession, its demand declined year by year, and it dropped to 1993
