Foreword Germination rate, clarity and health are recognized as three seed quality indicators and routinely measured at a seed checkpoint. The determination of these indicators has played a significant role in improving the quality of seeds and in promoting the improvement of seed production methods to meet the criteria for seed acquisition. Seed lots that pass the test should be of high quality, and emergence in the field is reliable. However, the emergence of the “seed vigor”, the fourth important quality indicator that determines seedling emergence in the seed field, is no longer necessary for the emergence of the field. The concept of seed vigor has been proposed for many years, but has only recently been identified as an important quality factor affecting seed and crop field performance. This article addresses the concept of seed vigor, the purpose of vitality testing, and its connection to seed production techniques.
