柳江人遗址发现于1958年9月.当时,距柳州市东南16公里处新兴农场的农业工人们,到附近山洞挖取岩泥作肥料.在一个名叫“通天岩”洞旁的一个支洞中,挖出了一具完整的人类头骨化石,接着又在离它不远处挖出了部分肢骨,同时还发现不少哺乳动物化石,其中包括一些破碎的巨獏、剑齿象、中国犀化石和一具较为完整的大熊猫骨架.中国科学院闻讯后立即派人前往考察,入骨化石随即送到北京,经人类学家吴汝康教授研究,被认为是“形成中的蒙古人种的一种早期类型,为迄今在中国以至整个东南亚发现的最早的现代人的代
