Historian Shakespeare sprang up in the first half of the 20th century. One of his most important contributors was Stoll. Starting from studying the literary and dramatic traditions of the Renaissance, Stall put Shakespeare into the stage background of the time. In his opinion, many of the unspeakable phenomena in Shakespeare’s plays were caused by the traditional provisions of the drama, and the shaping of the dramatis personae was also regulated by tradition. Therefore, they should not be psychologically analyzed as real people. Stoll’s critique and refutation of Romanticism’s critique opened the way for the historicist Shakespeare and made important contributions to the development of Shakespearean judgments in the 20th century.
