In the United States, although microprocessors and personal computers are rapidly evolving, significant progress has been made continuously in mainframe computers and small computers. For example, the rapid spread of fault-tolerant computing has encouraged several new companies to enter the market. Chip makers are putting forward some new design ideas to meet the growing hardware needs. Supercomputers are also getting “super”, not just supercomputers like Cray, but also super minicomputers and supercomputers. The most prominent of all these advances is an increase in computational speed.
