西周末期,《诗经》雅颂的格局已经形成,在季札观乐之前25年,在晋国也有《诗经》定本流传,和季札鲁国观乐的不是一个版本,与现存的毛诗也不是一个本子,因此,毛诗是经过整理的定本。根据《左传》和《国语》所载,我们发现大雅分为三什,是按照当时的礼乐体制编定的,也是当时和后来用诗的依据,不是由单纯的数字决定的。这表明什就是当时的礼乐体制结构,每一什都有十章组成,有确定的内容,而每章也有特定的内容,因此使用时可以按照什,也可以按照章,其取舍就是诗义。春秋之后,礼崩乐坏,往往只是断章取义。在所有的资料中,只有孔子删诗正乐之说,故《史记》的记载应该可以采信。
