When I was off night duty, I had to walk through along dark lane with a thrill of terror before I got home. Later on a one-arm man runs a small grocery at the entranceto the lane. Even though the shop is closed late at nightwhen I pass it, the light still shines, its faint glow reachingas far as the end of the lane.
Passing the shop one day, I asked the owner why he al-ways forgot to turn off the light. He raised his head and saidwith a simple smile, “Because we do not have street-lighting.”I kept silent for a while, l found he had a booming business.
Someone tells me a story. A blind man goes out with alantern at night. A puzzled man asks him, “Why do you takethe trouble to carry a lantern since you are unable to see any-thing?” He replies, “Isn’t anyone as blind as I in the pitch-dark night? That’s why I go out with it at night.”“Oh, I seeyou carry the lantern to show others the way”, says the puzzledman who seems to be enlightened. However he says,“That ismy original intention but I come to understand I do this also forthyself. I am blind. With the lantern I lighten the street for oth-ers, who notice me and will not bump into me.”
There must be a never-gone-out light in the heart of thegrocery owner as well as the blind-man. It illuminates the wayfor others as well as for themselves. The world is never dark if there is a light in everyone’s heart.
