Fiber-optic systems have been installed in complex environments such as swamps, deserts, seabed and aircraft, and are now being installed deep in the earth’s crust. Optelecom of Gesssburg, Md., Reported that it plans to have a data logging system using fiber optic communications installed in deep wellbores by the end of March. According to Gordon Gould, vice president of Optelecom, at least one dozen (12) sensors are usually used in a well to determine the surrounding Earth’s tectonics. These acoustic sensors, conductivity sensors, scintillation counters (used to measure radioactive decay induced by neutrons), and other detectors, usually carry signals through wires, so processing the data rate
