关于太平天国的王爵等级,昭王黄文英在自供中说王分五等:“那天朝的王有五等,若从前的东、南、西、北四王,翼王,现在的干王执掌朝纲,是一等王。若英王、忠王、侍王执掌兵权,是二等王。若康王、堵王、听王会打仗的是三等王。若我与和、(血卩)王是四等王。那五等王一概都叫列王。”此段记载,常为史家所引用,证明太平天国王爵等级分为五等。对照太平天国文献记载,黄文英的这段自述与史实不符。太平天国于辛开元年(1851年)十月二十五日在永安分封东、西、南、北、翼五王,同时诏令:
