19世纪中后期广东出现居巢和居廉这两位人文画家,在当时的画坛地位举足轻重,因两位同姓而合称为“二居”。居巢和居廉以写生、写实为主,描绘形态主要写意居多,在花鸟画的笔法和用料方式有大胆的创新。两位吸收恽寿平的没骨画法、文人写意的水墨法、传统院体工笔法等特点,再加以创新,发明撞水、撞粉法,20世纪初期形成一种潮流,众人将这一种新画法进行推广,在近代南岭绘画史上具有里程碑意义。
