In this thesis, I use archetypal criticism theory to analyze Alice Walker’s masterpiece “Purple” from both the subject and the structure. I think the novel is rich in archetypes. Walker around the pursuit of the theme of the narrative, including Xili pursuit of self-identity and Nate’s pursuit of ethnic identity. The structure of the novel is also in line with the U-shaped structure of the Bible. The U-shaped life of protagonist Xili coincides with the twists and turns in the pursuit of freedom and equality by African-American women. “Purple” is actually a wake-up trip for African-American women.
