河南省文联副主席、著名戏曲作家杨兰春在去年十二月于上海召开的中国戏曲现代戏研究会第四届年会上谈到,如何克服戏曲现代戏危机的问题。杨兰春说:“现在除少数几个剧种外,戏曲现代戏的上座率普遍不高。五十年代现代戏有许多剧目,如《刘巧儿》《李二嫂改嫁》《罗汉钱》《刘胡兰》等,演了何止百场?现在,一出戏能演一百场还要受嘉奖,这说明演一百场不容易。有人说现代戏上座率不佳,是因为戏曲化问题没解决好。我不以为然。有的剧种只演传统戏,不存在戏曲化的问题,也照样不上座,这该如何解释!”杨兰春主张,戏曲现代戏要更新换代。他说:
