The test conducted by the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center and the Pennsylvania Forest Service’s Pest Management Office shows that it is practically straightforward to use satellite data to estimate the degree of leaf decay caused by the harm caused by Gypsy moths. Studies have shown that satellite data can be used to accurately characterize the contours of the deciduous area of severity, and less accurate for deciduous and deciduous forests. The findings have led to the development of conventional approaches that make satellite data analysis easy in large areas with well-defined administrative boundaries. The system consists of a Landsat database acquired in Pennsylvania and a set of computer programs for image analysis.
