The new genetic engineering technology of the Belgian plant genetic system company creates hybrid varieties for several important crops. Researchers have isolated a plant gene that prevents pollen production and forms male-sterile plants, which are then breed with another plant to produce hybrid seeds. According to research director J. Limas, this technique can be applied to a variety of crops, including alfalfa, cotton and corn. M Robinson, general manager of Delta & Pine Land Company (Scott, Mississippi), said the development has a huge impact on agricultural production, especially for cotton production. However, pollination is a complex process and the ability to create genetically engineered male-sterile plants does not mean that hybrids of all crops can be automatically created by a simple method.
