Although ATM, Fast Ethernet, and fiber optic cable applications have become commonplace, the performance of most corporate LANs has not improved as much as expected. Many users have experienced problems while waiting to access E-mail. 99% of the cases are related to overloaded servers or poor-quality client software, rather than overloaded packets. How to improve network performance is to a large extent a rather ambiguous thing. There are quite a few uncertainties that need to be analyzed in order to find the key cause of the performance degradation. Unfortunately, the complexity of today’s networks has caused network administrators to be blinded by the reasons for the problems. Network analysis software has made great progress in recent years, but CompScope’s EcoScope or HP’s OpenView is still complicated, expensive and not comprehensive enough. The well-known IS vendors gather different management tools from three or four vendors and sell them to customers to deal with this incomplete question.
