Researchers at the University of Texas in the United States are making groundbreaking studies on the production of liquid methanol with CO2 using copper oxide nanorods and sunlight. It is said that this new approach is safer, simpler and cheaper than the previous method of converting greenhouse gases into useful products. The researchers first coated copper oxide (CuO) nanorods plated with cuprous oxide (Cu2O) crystallites. Then in the lab, a nanorod array composed of two kinds of copper oxides is immersed in an aqueous solution rich in CO2 and irradiated with artificial sunlight to cause photoelectrification
