[Objective] To observe the effect of Jingfukang Granules on the changes of proteoglycan (PG) content and composition of rabbit cervical intervertebral disc under abnormal stress environment, and to explore the possible mechanism of preventing and treating cervical spondylosis. [Methods] Thirty-two rabbits were divided into control group, model group, prevention group and treatment group. The rabbits in the last three groups were subjected to abnormal stress environment with a 45° flexion position under 5 hours/times day. The model group and the treatment group were given intragastric administration of Jingfukang Granules 2 months after the model was established. The C5-6 cervical intervertebral disc biochemistry was used to determine the content of PG and various components, and the possible differences among the groups were compared. [Results] There were no significant changes in the total amount of PG and the content of each component in the control group; the total amount of PG and the content of each component in the cervical disc of model group, prevention group and treatment group showed a significant downward trend (P<0.05). The total amount of PG in the prevention group was significantly higher than that in the model group (P < 0.05) at 2 months of the experiment, but there was no significant difference in the contents of the components. The total amount of PG in the model group, prevention group and treatment group was 3 months after the experiment. There was no significant difference in the content of each component (P>0.05). [Conclusion] Jingfukang can reduce the loss of total PG in abnormally stressful cervical intervertebral discs to a certain extent, but it cannot change the content of its components.
