November 13, 2012 Kyodo News Japan’s Ministry of Energy, Resources and Energy announced on the 12th the world’s first methane hydrate (commonly known as “combustible ice”) marine mining experiments summary. At present, Japan has carried out submarine excavation on the offshore Atsumi Peninsula in Aichi Prefecture and plans to start a two-week combustible ice mining and actual gas production experiment around February next year. Combustible ice, the main component of natural gas, is a solid formed by the combination of methane and water. Japan’s offshore reserves can be used for domestic natural gas for about 100 years and is expected to become a new generation of energy resources
