The State Key Laboratory of High Performance Ceramics and Superfine Microstructure was founded in 1988 upon the approval of both the State Planning Commission and the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The laboratory, located in the busy urban district of Shanghai, was supported by the State Planning Commission using the loan of the World Bank and the accessory funds contributed by the Chinese Government to establish the research environment during 1991—1996.
