民间传统芦笙的和声,应属于以增强部分旋律音量和装饰旋律色彩为主的“装饰性和声”;民族传统笙的传统和声,则是具有和声旋律特性的“旋律性和声”。二者与西洋传统和声(现代改良芦笙和改良笙中也不时使用)的“功能性和声”比较,并不具有和声功能性质。芦笙的“装饰性和声”与笙的“旋律性和声”的和声结构,均为协和的五八度、四八度和五度、四度和音,但它们在音乐旋律的表现运用中却大相径庭。其主要区别在于,“装饰性和声”是以旋律装饰为目的;而“旋律性和声”则为以旋律运用为主旨。
