Of the 400 richest Americans listed in the Forbes magazine, there are 64 individuals and families with more than one billion in wealth. Of these, only nine are based on inheritance, primarily the Rockefeller family, the Hunter family, Paul Mellon and G.P. Getty. Some of the others have received some help, but many have started from scratch. The richest American is 39-year-old Bill Gates, who dropped out of Harvard and founded Microsoft with another Paul Allen who dropped out of Washington State University. Forbes estimated Gates’ property value of $9.4 billion, and Paul Allen ranked 11th with $3.9 billion. Personally worth 5.9 billion U.S. dollars
