In Basin Creek, 10 km northeast of Stanley, Idaho, Tertiary feldspathic sandstone and conglomerate beneath the Eocene Challis volcanic rocks contain uranium-bearing, coke-like carbonaceous debris. The economic potential of this sandstone and conglomerate is currently being evaluated. The springs are prolific in contact with stratigraphic layers of different lithologies, and water flowing from the springs sprouts the bryophytes (moss, aurora). Twenty-two springs and associated bryophyte samples were collected; two springs were found to contain 6.5 μg / l (ppb) of uranium-water, apparently at abnormal concentrations (normalized), up to 1800 μg / g ). The moss in both springs also contained arsenic in anomalous concentrations, one with high anomalies of beryllium. The third spring contains a small amount of anomalous uranium, both of which have abnormal uranium (400, 700 μg / g) and high levels of cadmium and lead. The fourth spring contains uranium normal (0.18 μg / l) while the moss in the spring contains medium uranium and contains high levels of lead, germanium and thallium. These results indicate that in the Basin Creek area, the moss taken in the springs may show uranium more reliably than the water samples. The reason may be the ability of moss to enrich uranium and its accompanying indicator elements. And the ability to bring together the uranium changes that have taken place in spring water at any time.
