艾青早期的巴黎书写在开放的现代意识下彻底打破了传统农业文明形态下所形成的封闭、保守、因循、宁静、单一的审美格局,而礼赞和趋向于开放、自由、激情、创造、动态、繁复的审美格局,特别是在现代主义文学艺术影响下,还呈现一定的唯美-颓废色彩;同时,严肃的左翼立场使艾青对于巴黎的冷酷、傲慢和社会不公平进行质疑和批判。开放意识下的巴黎与左翼立场下的巴黎形成矛盾也充满张力,在后现代大众化、物质化、机械化的审美语境中,竟成为不可复制的艺术典范,因而也具有不同凡响的文学史价值。
