新生儿群体筛查的目的是发现对众多的新生儿进行过滤筛查出那些貌似健康,而实际患有某种先天性疾病的患儿,以做到早期诊断,早期治疗,使其得以正常发育,提高人群健康素质。许多国家的实践证明这种方法是行之有效的措施。对新生儿筛查的疾病应具有①新生儿期可能作出诊断的。②放置不治预后不良或严重危害身心健康的。③有一定的发病率。④早期治疗可防止发病的。⑤有快速可靠、简单易行、价格低廉、适用于大规模人群普查的筛查方法等基本条件。现将近年来筛查现况概述如下:
