Researchers at the medical school affiliated with Cornell University in New York, USA, report that there is a fast, economical and sensitive test that can be used to identify women at risk of developing diabetes during pregnancy. Lois Jovanovic, an associate professor of medicine, presented research data from the research group at an international scientist conference convened by the American Diabetes Association. 2% to 4% of all pregnant women studied are intolerant to sugar and light-weight diabetes, resulting in increased morbidity and mortality at birth. The American College of Obstetric and Gynecology recommends a 2-day diagnosis: The first step is to examine urine sugar; if positive, make a 4-hour glucose tolerance on the next day
