个旧自古产锡,《汉书·地理志》载:“贲古(今个旧),北采山出锡,西羊山出铅锡,南乌山出锡。”英国《简明大不列颠百科全书》第三卷载:“个旧,中国云南省第二大城市,著名的锡都”。迄今为止,个旧锡业开发已有2000多年的历史,是全国最大的以锡业为主的有色金属矿区,已探明的锡金属为云南省储量的86%,占全国储量的1/3。新中国成立后,个旧成为“一五”期间国家工业重点
