The two main shocks occurred on the 19th and 20th days after an interval of 36 hours with magnitudes of 8.1 and 7.5, respectively. The quake took place on a section of the Mexican subduction zone plate, known as Micakinko. The first major earthquake killed 10,000 people; 50,000 people were homeless; and the property lost 400 million U.S. dollars, including the collapse of more than 200 multi-storey buildings. The main disaster zone is Mexico City’s soft soil area, located 360 km away from the epicenter. The two main shocks are caused by the subduction of the Cocos plate to the North American continental plate, which is the most active thrust in both hemispheres
