前言矾山明矾石矿的发现时间,有的说宋代,有的说明、清。解放前,最早为1927年,进行过一些地质调查。解放后进行了正规勘探和补充勘探。关于该矿床的成因,长期以来一直存在着争论:叶良辅(1931)认为属“岩浆期后热液矿床”,孙岳(1959)认为是“典型的低温热液矿床”,陈益朗(1964)认为是“中低温热液矿床”。70年代中期,热液观点开始动摇,出现了“火山热液型或火山喷气矿床(区测队田行舟,1975),“火山沉积再改造型矿床”(林奇、谢宪等,1980),“火山沉积—气液交代矿床”(李广有,1981)。
