Alibaba to settle down in Australia
For Alibaba, the year 2014 was definitely a milestone. In that year’s Double-11 Shopping Festival, this Chinese ecommerce giant hit the historical high again by realizing the sales volume of US$9.3 billion in 24 hours. Several hours before the record, Alibaba finished its IPO, which is so far the largest in the world.
After the finalization of the ChinaAustralia Free Trade Agreement, Alibaba, which was committed to overseas development recently, announced their moves in Australia. It is going to bring Australian enterprises, brands and products closer to Chinese consumers through settling Alipay and Taobao down in this country.
In China, Alipay is the largest and most frequently used online payment tool. It is also the largest mobile payment solution supplier in the world with its 800 million registered accounts. It could finish 80 million deals on the daily basis and 45 million of them are finished via its mobile kit. In its 2014 financial year ended June 30, Alipay totally completed the deals valuing US$780 billion.
Alipay has already registered a company in Australia called Alipay Australia. This company is going to work with a local company Paybang to provide solutions for Australian enterprises and businessmen in the cross-border payment through Alipay. Alipay also reached the agreement with Australia Post in selling, disseminating and publicizing the Alipay Purchase Card to Australian consumers in 4,400 retail outlets. The Australian consumers can use these cards shop in Taobao and Tmall, the two online retail platforms of Alibaba.
Before the expansion in Australia, Alipay also found its way into the United States, where it launched the payment app ePay to help U.S. retailers handle all matters from payment process to currency exchange.
Taobao and Tmall are respectively the largest C2C and B2C platforms in China. After stepping into Australia, Taobao and Tmall will launch an official ecommerce channel – Australian Life Show of Taobao on their websites. There the retailers will sell Chinese consumers the safe and high-quality agricultural products and foods approved by the Australian government.
“For ecommerce dealers and crossborder traders, Australia is an exciting market. Now, the demand of Chinese consumers keeps changing and the have a growing demand for the quality and safe overseas products, which is far from being satisfied by the local market. The cooperation between Alipay and Australia will bring more Australian products to Chinese consumers,” says Peng Yijie, director of Alipay’s international business. With negative opinions on economy, Australians refuse to pay more during Christmas
The per capita spending of Australians during the Christmas in 2014 is going to be Aus$37 less than the year before. This is mainly due to Australians’lack of the professional safety.
According to the investigation made by Commonwealth Bank of Australia(CBA) into 1000 Australians, each person would spend Aus$1,339 averagely during their Christmas holiday. Their expenses are mainly spent on the promotional campaigns for gifts, holiday and Boxing Day.
Diana Mousina, an economist with CBA, says that the Australians would spend Aus$37 less per capita compared with a year before.
“This is a warning. When the con- sumers decide to spend less than a year before, this means a worse performance of the retail industry,” Mousina says.“Consumers are less willing to spend as most consumers are holding negative opinions on the outlook of their personal wealth and national economy. Many people are worrying that they might lose their jobs someday.”
In 2014, Australians spent Aus$18 billion in total on gifts, food and travel. The spending on gifts took a larger part as the consumption amounted to Aus$7.6 billion.
It is also reported that the holiday consumption varies greatly to states. New South Wales sports the largest consumption as the per capita spending in this state reaches Aus$1339. People of Queensland are the most thrifty as they averagely spend only Aus$779. That’s because they are less willing to spend too much money on holidays, wine, food and treatment for friends.
Australia one of only four nations forecast to miss 2020 emissions tar- get
Australia is one of just four nations not on track to meet emissions reduction promises, a UN report has warned, while a US-based research firm has poured scorn on Tony Abbott’s insistence that coal is “good for humanity.”
A report by the UN Environment Program states that the world should aim to be “carbon neutral” by 2070 at the latest. Exceeding a budget of just 1,000 gigatons of carbon dioxide would risk“severe, pervasive and in some cases irreversible climate change impacts”.
In an analysis of each signatory to a UN goal to limit global warming to 2C above pre-industrial levels, the report found that just four nations – Australia, Canada, Mexico and the US – needed to do more to meet their respective emissions reduction targets by 2020. The UNEP analysis finds that Australia is set to emit 710 million tons of CO2 in 2020. This is well above the 555 million tons it would emit if it were to meet a goal of a 5% reduction in greenhouse gases by 2020, based on 2000 levels.
The report notes that Australia’s Coalition government has “replaced carbonpricing mechanism with Emissions Reduction Fund. This results in an increase in projected emissions for 2020.”
After scrapping carbon pricing in July, emissions have risen in Australia, reversing a previous downward trend.
The replacement Direct Action policy, which the government claims will be more effective and a lesser burden on cost of living pressures, will start voluntary payments to businesses to reduce emissions from the first quarter of 2015. Independent analysis has cast doubt on whether Direct Action will meet the 5% emissions reduction goal.
The UNEP said countries could slash emissions through renewable ener- gy and energy efficiency while maintaining economic growth.
Achim Steiner, executive director of UNEP, said there are “many synergies between development and climate change mitigation goals.
“Linking development policies with climate mitigation will help countries build the energy-efficient, low-carbon infrastructures of the future and achieve transformational change that echoes the true meaning of sustainable development.”
