When measuring RR intervals based on digitized ECG, there is a margin of error due to the limited sampling frequency, which affects beat analysis of heart rate. This paper presents a quantitative description of this error model. The RR intervals to be measured are represented by the sum of the true values of the RR interval and the measurement error. In order to study the effect of this error on the HRV power spectrum, the first- and second-order statistical characteristics of these errors are calculated. The results show that these statistical features are only a function of the ECG sampling rate; in particular, the error power spectrum adds a high-pass filter term (ie colored noise) to the power spectrum of the HRV.
