选本具有衡鉴、评定的功能。选家必须在个人审美偏好与诗坛风尚、在文学与政治的互动中找到最佳平衡点,所编定的选本才能起到树立权威诗人、确定经典诗歌的作用。优秀的诗歌选本从实践层面上将选家的诗学观念具体化,并与诗文评、诗文创作等一起,构建选家的诗学体系。清代诗歌选家编定选本的最终目标的是影响时代风会,扭转诗歌地位下滑的局面。在清理古代诗歌的同时,一些选家也编定了大量“当代”选本,这表明选家有意识地将“当下”的诗歌创作纳入诗史传统之中,为“当下”文学的存在、发展寻找最恰当的逻辑理路和文化支撑。
