六十年代初期,苏美相继发射人造地球卫星获得成功。此后,两国就开始了反卫星武器的研究。近年来,随着两个超级大国军备竞赛的加剧,它们在反卫星武器方面的竞争也在逐步升级。反卫星武器可以选用多种方案。其中有:(1)地面发射强激光;(2)机上发射强激光:(3)星上发射强激光;(4)地面发射红外制导导弹;(5)机上发射红外制导导弹;(6)地面发射核弹;(7)地面发射共同轨道武器等。这些方案中,红外制导导弹是比较现实可行的选择之一。
