Lanthanum oxybromide (LaOBr) is a good matrix for luminescent materials. Since the 1970s, LaOBr: Tb and LaOBr: Bi efficient X-ray intensifying screens have been developed. LaOBr: Tb has also been used as a cathode ray emitting material. However, the promotion of the use of such materials is hampered by the unstable chemical nature of LaOBr. It is an important issue to study the hydrolysis process of LaOBr and to prevent its deliquescence and metamorphism.
