《华盛顿广场》是亨利·詹姆斯的早期作品之一,这部中篇小说讲述了女性在当时的社会背景下的恋爱与婚姻,体现了亨利·詹姆斯一贯的主题,即单纯与世故的对立。本文把这篇小说作为一篇女性成长小说来研究,将围绕女主人公的成长经历,结合成长小说理论对女主人公的成长主题进行研究。通过分析女主人公的主体意识、性意识的觉醒,以及当时的两种道德观念分析促使其成长的因素。通过研究女主人公的成长历程,揭示其思想和心理的逐步变化,最终成长为成熟、独立的女性。
“Washington Square” is one of the early works of Henry James, a novella about women’s love and marriage in the social context at that time. It embodies the consistent theme of Henry James, that is, the simple and the opposite. This article studies this novel as a female growth novel, focusing on the growing experience of the heroine and studying the growth theme of the heroine based on the theory of growth novels. Through the analysis of the heroine’s subjective consciousness, the awakening of sexual consciousness, and the two kinds of moral concepts at the time to promote the growth of the factors. Through the study of the protagonist’s growth process, revealing the gradual changes of her thoughts and psychology, she eventually grows into a mature and independent woman.
