Faulkner is an American writer, winner of the Nobel Prize for literature, but also is the master of the use of symbolism. His masterpiece The Rose for Emily used the postwar American social background as a portrait depicting the lonely miserable and arrogant tragedy of Miss Emily, the daughter of the former South Fall planter. This article analyzes the symbolism of rose and the main characters in the novel to understand Faulkner ’s writing technique and style more deeply, and to reveal the culture and influence of the alternation of North and South American society at the time.
