This article examines the experience of refugees in three communities in Shanghai during the Japanese invasion of China in 1937. Social institutions and political organizations work together in different ways to bring people safely to different parts of China. This suggests that this shows that in the first half of the 20th century China’s immigration status was trans-geographically and urban identity was never completely restricted to one city; personnel and institutional networks were working together to cope with the crisis caused by the most devastating invasion during the Second World War.
