现今学术界通常认为柿蒂纹(或谓四叶花)就是莲花,并由此推导柿蒂花的文化内涵,其中有一种看法,认为与佛教在中国传播有关。从论据和论证看,把柿蒂花判定为莲花的论据仅有沂南古墓、宋山汉墓图像等考古文物与《鲁灵光殿赋》《西京赋》等传世文献的相互比证。但是,汉赋描述的是生人居住的宫殿,顺应于宇宙秩序,藻井莲花有厌火功能,而墓葬则为身后安定的场所,需要人为地把墓室模拟为宇宙,藻井柿蒂花则与天界天象有关,两者是截然不同的,所以,文物与文献比证的论证逻辑难以成立。此外,也有把柿蒂花比定为“侯”(箭靶子)或“方花”的。对于柿蒂纹的内在寓义分析,未必需要“柿蒂纹就是荷花”之类的中间环节。柿蒂纹成熟于战国而大盛于两汉,比附于阴阳家的宇宙观念而更为流行,阴阳家至汉代开始与五行家发生混流,作为程式化表现的柿蒂纹自身却没有及时地与新的学术思想对应起来,图像表现与寓义发生分离,这些都仍然与莲花与否没有必然的联系,与佛教更加无关,更何况汉晋时期的译经对莲花并没有表现出特别的兴趣,同时,从考古文物看,与佛像伴生的莲花无一例采用柿蒂花图式加以表现的。关于柿蒂纹的研究,聚讼纷然,迄无定论,从中日两国学者提供的论据材料和论证逻辑进行考查,现在只能说柿蒂纹被认定为莲花是没有明确依据的。
