Objective To investigate the role of endothelin (ET) and calcitonin gene related peptide (CGRP) in the development and progression of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Methods The levels of plasma ET and CGRP in 30 patients with RA and 20 normal controls were measured by radioimmunoassay. Results The plasma levels of ET and ET / CGRP in RA patients were significantly higher than those in normal controls (P <0.01). Further analysis showed that the level of ET and the ratio of ET / CGRP were significantly higher in active RA patients and RA patients with stage III-IV arthritis than that in RA patients with stable and joint changes of stage Ⅰ-Ⅱ; Plasma CGRP levels were significantly lower than the latter (P <0.01). Conclusion There is a clear imbalance of ET and CGRP in patients with RA, which is closely related to the severity of RA. It suggests that ET and CGRP are involved in the pathogenesis of RA.
