Spencer’s love sonnet, poem “Xian Hou”, “shepherd’s calendar” and Spencer poetry has always been the focus of Spencer’s research. However, Spencer’s association with Ireland has generally been overlooked. In this article, Spencer’s political essay “The Status Quo in Ireland” examines Spencer’s Irish concept of nationality and its causes in the context of history in the second half of the 16th century. He argues that “The Status Quo in Ireland” characterizes the Irish nation’s narrative The Elizabethan Empire of Greater England and the cultural worries of England in Irish colonialism. At the same time, the publication of this “political document” undoubtedly strengthened the consciousness of Greater England and played a role of molding in England’s national consciousness.
