We hungly read newspaper articles. Several film critics such as Andrews Saris, Pauline Kyle, John Simon and Stanley Kaufman are arguing, and some of the pioneers of cinema education are also gaining an artistic position for the film. By the early seventies, this battle won: all American colleges and universities have opened cinema courses. Some have also set up or are preparing to set up degree programs. As these new curricula, instructional programs, and dissertations continue to emerge, the gap between academic film studies and newspaper reviews is growing.
