Two inspections over half a century have proved that Rochester, New York is America’s most benevolent city, attracted by its fame. Not long ago I conducted a field interview and wanted to see myself in person. Where are the Rochester people? Look at a few recent happenings in the city: An absent-minded citizen threw an envelope with a passbook into the mailbox, and a post office employee took the initiative to help him get it out. Several workers helped their neighbors to put the destroyed roof of the fire with new ones. A truck driver volunteered to pick up a toy doll that had just dropped out of a car from the road and handed it back to the sad, two and a half year old master. These are commonplace things you can see everywhere in the city. The most recent U.S. study of cities was conducted between 1990-1992 by Robert Column, director of psychology at California State University
