The seismic activity targeted by seismic designs in UK nuclear power plants is usually based on the spectral shape of peak ground acceleration (PGA) values estimated from a prediction equation. Spectral and peak ground acceleration prediction equations were derived from the 1980s. However, compared with the level of scientific development in the field, the technical basis for the formula for calculating these seismic loads is outdated. In this paper, therefore, we discuss alternative spectrum shapes and alternatives, their associated advantages and problems, and discuss the generation of a uniform hazard response spectrum instead of a fixed spectrum that determines peak ground acceleration.
