一般人查词典是为了弄懂词的意义,而有些人却把词典当作有趣、消闲的读物。据多位作者所述,钱锺书先生就是这样一位读者。他把重得拿不动的大词典挨着字母逐条细读:他在漫长的旅途上手捧一本别人认为“索然寡味”的英文词典,怡然自得地读了一个月:他在去英国的轮船上以约翰逊博士的《英文词典》伴随,深得其中的乐趣,自称趣味之深,有不足为外人道者。我想如果我们有这种精神钻研一本英文词典,我们在许多方面都会有很大的长进。
Most people search the dictionary in order to understand the meaning of the word, while others use the dictionary as a fun, leisurely reading. According to many authors, Mr. Qian is one such reader. He read the retellingly large dictionary one letter at a time: he took a long journey to read an English-language dictionary that others thought was “dull” and read it comfortably for a month: Ship to Dr. Johnson’s “English Dictionary” accompanied, won the fun, claiming the depth of fun, there are enough for outsiders. I think if we have this spirit to study an English dictionary, we will make great progress in many aspects.
