The growing number of urban poor in Bangkok, especially young children of low-income families, face irreversible health damage caused by urban traffic pollutants. Physicians of Thailand’s Public Health Bureau surveyed 210 children in a Bangkok primary school next to the main road. They found that many children had problems with balance function and agility in hand movements, and 30% had oral lead lines, which were horizontal lines on the upper and lower gums. There was a small amount of lead sulfide deposition, indicating obvious lead poisoning. A recent report by the World Bank also cited the lead in air emissions from cars in the Thai capital that is causing serious public hazards.
