Objective To investigate the relationship between the polymorphism of angiotensin Ⅰ converting enzyme (ACE) gene and the susceptibility to type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and diabetic nephropathy (DN) in the elderly. Methods The polymorphism of ACE gene in 172 normal elderly (≥ 60 years old) and 140 T2DM patients (including 62 with DN) was analyzed by PCR with three primer pairs. Results There was no significant difference in ACE genotype and allele frequency between healthy control group and diabetic group (P> 0.05). In T2DM group, DD genotype was significantly higher in patients with DN (P <0.05). Conclusion ACE gene polymorphism has nothing to do with the susceptibility to diabetes, but closely related with the incidence of complications DN.
