佛雕是指以木石、玉等材料雕刻而成的佛像,是佛教艺术的集中体现。佛教亦称“像教”,就是通过雕塑、绘画这些生动具体的佛的造象来宣传教义。随着佛教于东汉(公元25-220年)时传入中国,佛的造像也传入中国。但开始并不兴盛,直到魏晋南北朝时才得到较大的发展。佛教的盛行,寺庙的大兴,促进了佛雕艺术的发展,特别是石窟佛雕,规模巨大,数量众多。著名的大同云岗石佛、龙门石佛、敦煌莫高窟石佛泥塑等,以其生动的造型、非凡的气度、精湛的雕刻艺术等特色而流传下来。
