1980年10月4日,我们西北大学77级考古班到延安参观途中顺便到黄帝陵参观,在桥山南坡上漫步时,突然在断面上发现了仰韶文化的彩陶片、石刀和灰坑等遗迹和遗物,得知这里是一处仰韶文化遗址。后来在20世纪80年代后期全省文物普查时这处遗址得到进一步确认。2007年3月,为参加陕西省政府主办的“黄帝与中华文化学术研讨会”准备材料时,我又想起了20多年前的这件事,于是决定再次赴黄陵县调查黄帝陵及其周边史前文化分布情况。这一想法得到了延安市文物局、延安市文物研究所、黄陵县文物旅游
