After being introduced to China in 1910, Angelo’s play Angelo attracted the translation and adaptation of different translators and writers and became the “Di Si Niang” staged several times on the Chinese stage. This article first analyzes the reason why the play is widely accepted in China, and points out that in addition to the touching plot and the theme of sacrificing for love, the combination of the figure pattern and Chinese traditional literature is the main factor for its successful acceptance. The second part Examines the evolution of the play in the Chinese-speaking world and discusses the cultural position of different recipients and how the climate of the times influenced their “rewriting” of the original.
