In 1975, Malaysia was hit hard by the severe economic downturn of Japan (Japan is Malaysia’s largest trading partner). Malaysia’s exports to Japan have dropped sharply, while Malaysia’s imports from Japan (mainly capital and intermediate goods) have to be maintained at a certain level. This gave rise to a strange debate on the trade balance between Malaysia and Japan claiming they have deficits in their trade with each other. The situation is improving thanks to the rapid economic recovery in Japan. However, in the long run, the problems (especially the trade related to primary commodities) still exist. It seems that Malaysia continues to demand that Japan make more concessions in this regard
